Reentering camp was an unpleasant experience. Fierjo taught her the words to his song, which he said would work for her even though she hadn’t any magic, but Cecily couldn’t help but notice the leering gazes following her. Her wet clothing felt foolish, but she held her head high and focused on Fierjo’s words.

When Fierjo left her in her tent, Cecily changed into the clothes Kel had brought, which still lay on her rickety table. The warm fabric, light yet sturdy, included trousers and a tunic. It was nowhere near as flattering as the torn gown, but the looser outfit left her feeling less exposed.

As she climbed into her cot, drained from her experience at the pond, she whispered the words over and over to herself.

When darkness sets its grip on me

And fear starts to descend,

I’ll hold on to the light of old

Until the very end.

Yawning, she closed her eyes, intent on sleep.
